Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton is a controversial blogger with one of the most popular celebrity gossip blogs, PerezHilton.com which receives millions of web hits daily. Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., is openly gay and an activist for gay rights.
One issue that has gained a lot of attention recently is gay teenagers who have committed suicide due to bullying at school. A recent post on his website explains that 17% of U.S. students reported being bullied multiple times a semester. He posts stories about many of the deceased gay teens and how their lives were cut short over hatred from other kids. In response to these stories, he along with many other celebrities including the Kardashians, Adam Lambert, and even President Obama have made "it gets better" videos, helping gay youth get through the hard times of adolescence. Hilton has also claimed he will not attack celebrities on his blog anymore in an effort to promote love, not hate.

  1. I rarely read his blog, but when i did it was always bashing on celebrities. i will be anxious to read how he now blogs in order to promote love, not hate. I like that he is doing that becuase it seems as though these kinds of things are something people do not usually hear much about and it will be good that such a famous blogger is changing the way he blogs to help a cause.

  2. In the past when I would read PerezHilton.com, it was purely for entertainment value, and he did seem to know all the latest gossip about celebrities. I never thought that the people he made fun of would take it seriously or be offended, but now that these new issues about bullying and gay rights have come up, it makes sense that he is trying to change. I saw an interview with Perez on the Ellen Degeneres Show, and he brings up how the celebrities he bashes are real people with feelings, and not simply characters in "Hollywood". Because of the exposure of the celebrities, people tend to forget that they could get upset about snide comments that would upset anyone else.

  3. I read Perez almost everyday to stay in the know. It would sometimes bother me when he would make fun of celebrities, but it was also what separated his blog from other celebrity news websites. His blog was known for making fun of celebrities and that is why a lot of people would read his blog. Granted most of the time he would go too far, but other times it was what made his blog fun to read. I think it's good that he isn't being a bully anymore, but I'm one of those skeptics that think he'll eventually turn back to bullying.
